Big Bend National Park · Texas
Big Bend is a huge, remote corner of West Texas where the Rio Grande cuts deep canyons and the Chisos Mountains rise out of the Chihuahuan Desert. Families can take short walks like the trail into Santa Elena Canyon, look for roadrunners and javelinas, and enjoy some of the darkest night skies in the country. The visitor centers have Junior Ranger books and exhibits; fall through spring is the most comfortable time, since summer heat in the desert is intense.
Hours, roads, and programs change with the seasons. Check current conditions on the official Big Bend National Park website before you go.
