White Sands National Park · New Mexico
White Sands protects most of the world's largest gypsum dunefield, glistening white hills of sand in southern New Mexico. Kids love sledding down the dunes (sleds are sold at the visitor center store), and Dunes Drive leads to picnic areas and short trails. Bring water and sun protection, and know that the park road and nearby highway sometimes close briefly for missile testing.
Hours, roads, and programs change with the seasons. Check current conditions on the official White Sands National Park website before you go.
