Congaree National Park · South Carolina
Congaree protects the largest stretch of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the Southeast, with some of the tallest trees in the eastern United States. The Boardwalk Loop starting at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center is an easy, flat walk through the floodplain forest, and paddling Cedar Creek is a fun outing with older kids. Bring bug spray in warm months, and look up the park's synchronous firefly event if you visit in late spring.
Hours, roads, and programs change with the seasons. Check current conditions on the official Congaree National Park website before you go.
