Mount Rainier National Park · Washington
Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the lower 48, ringed by wildflower meadows and old-growth forest. At Paradise, families can visit the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center and take short walks, like the one to Myrtle Falls. On the park’s east side, the road to Sunrise usually opens to cars in late June or early July and closes in late September or early October. Snow can linger into July, so check nps.gov for road status and whether timed entry reservations are needed.
2026 update (checked Oct. 7, 2026): Sunrise Road is closed to private vehicles for the rest of the 2026 season because of the Wonderland Complex fires; it is open to pedestrians and bicyclists only. Sources: NPS Alerts & Conditions (updated Sept. 24, 2026), Road Status (updated Sept. 28, 2026), and Sunrise (usual season).
Hours, roads, and programs change with the seasons. Check current conditions on the official Mount Rainier National Park website before you go.
